Chapter Seventeen

Wednesday, August 30th.

Levell Hotel. Downtown Amsterdam.

Bright light pouring through the open curtains made me squint my tired eyes and that made my head pound more. My arm throbbed and my throat wouldn’t swallow. Couldn’t swallow. So fuckin dry, I figured I’d swallowed something furry. White fuzzy rabbit.

Turned on the faucet in the bathroom and stuck my head under the tap. The water tasted like shit. I swallowed enough to test if I could swallow and spit the rest out.

Heard banging on my door and I hoped it was room service bringing me coffee—couldn’t be. Didn’t order any yet.

I opened the door and soldier girl walked in with two coffees. “Time to get to work. What did you get last night from the contact in the park?” She sat down in the easy chair and stared at my tats and all the rest. All I had on was my boxers. The snug black ones Annie bought me.

“Do you seriously need all that ink?”

I shrugged. “Never pay much attention to people who say seriously because they’re usually full of shit.”

“You’re pleasant in the morning.”

“Try to be.”

She sipped her coffee and pointed at my bandage. “What happened to your arm?”

“Got stabbed.”

“You don’t have the target tied and gagged in your room, so I’m presuming you didn’t get her.”

My hand went to my head, and I rubbed the egg-sized lump where Talia’s helper had beaned me. “Got knocked out by her…helper. She’s got help. I fuckin had her. When I woke up, they were gone.”

“Drink your coffee and I’ll fix your arm.”

“You a doctor?”

“Army nurse. I was a medic in the field, but I do this now. I’m happier on my laptop and the pay is excellent.”

“New career. I get it. Same for me.”

She looked up at me and smiled. “Your former career was…?”

“Carjacker.”

Soldier girl giggled. “Uh huh. Interesting line of work. I can see how that would lay solid groundwork leading up to you becoming the personal bodyguard for the Vice-President.”

“Sure. Make fun of me. I can take it. Two said I was good at adapting.”

Soldier girl changed the subject. “I received notification of Talia Borden’s movement before I came to see you. Let’s grab some food and get on the road.”

“Where are they going?”

“CIA intel says they’re heading south towards Germany.”

“CIA have any idea where they are…like now?”

“I’ll check the updates when I go back to my room. I wanted to make sure you were up and making progress because there is a sense of urgency. Let me fix your arm, then you can get dressed. We’ll eat a quick breakfast downstairs and then leave. That sound okay with you?”

“Guess it will have to. I’ve got a bitch of a headache. Don’t know what that fucker hit me with.”

With no warning, soldier girl stuck her hand into my hair and felt around for the lump. “Oh yeah, you have a Grade ‘A’ extra-large goose egg there, Donovan, but I don’t feel any dried blood in your hair.” She smiled. “You have lots of hair.
